Teresa Wiseman The magical “sky island mountains” of the Sonoran Dessert inspires my creations. I discovered Apache Arizona while traveling cross country working Renaissance Festivals. My winters here were magical. In the evening I would watch the sun set ablaze the Peloncillo Mountains while preparing my own pit of fire. I felt the spirit of my ancestors guide me as placed the clay treasures I nurtured back into the earth soon to be coveted by flame. The textures, colors and spirit of this beautiful valley are found in all of my hand crafted art pieces. I have studied with master potters across the US, learning a variety of glazing styles and pottery building techniques. Combining what I have learned from my modern day masters with the wisdom of my Celtic and Native American ancestors I have developed a natural rustic look for my work. These unique hand crafted designs are decorative pieces of art that will accent any home, yet are quite practical for every day use. All of my pieces are hand thrown and painted with non-toxic high fire earthenware, stone ware and porcelain clay. Firing twice in temperatures exceeding 1200 degrees ensures the vitrification of the clay, giving the pottery a rock hard water proof finish that is dishwasher and microwave safe. Due to my training as a master’s apprentice I work my pieces in a production type process. One month I will work up a batch of marbled earth and create a variety of oil lamps. The next week I may make a large batch of smudge bowls, painting images of the animal spirits that are guiding me that day. All the while fermenting a batch of clay to make next months weathered porcelain candle pots. You never know what I will be working on next, or how many of one item there will be. One thing you can count on is that each piece is an original one of a kind filled with the love and beauty I draw from my surroundings. |
